    Les travaux de recherche du Dr Séguin portent surtout sur les aspects cognitifs et émotifs de la santé mentale, tout en examinant les facteurs de risque de l’alcoolisme et de l’hypertension. Sa formation de clinicien lui permet de travailler tant au niveau des schémas cognitifs qu'avec des modèles de traitement de l'information et les fonctions cérébrales sous-jacentes.

    Ses travaux de doctorat (Université McGill, 1995) portaient essentiellement sur les aspects neuropsychologiques de l'agression physique. Les travaux subséquents ont élargi la base conceptuelle de ses recherches pour inclure l'hyperactivité et les autres troubles extériorisés. Une étude longitudinale débutant à la naissance lui a permis d'examiner les premières années du développement des troubles extériorisés et autres troubles de l'autorégulation du point de vue du développement cognitif. Une des hypothèses importantes de ces travaux propose que les troubles extériorisés ne sont pas tant le résultat de l'apprentissage qu'un échec de l'apprentissage de l'autorégulation. L'autorégulation serait donc acquise en cours de développement. La recherche porte sur les bases physiologiques, génétiques et environnementales de cet échec.

    L'échec vient-il d'événements périnataux? Réside-t-il plutôt dans les pratiques parentales? L'enfant fait-il face à des limites intellectuelles, voire neuropsychologiques? Le tempérament de l'enfant est-il difficile à régulariser? Ces facteurs sont-ils combinés entre eux? Dans quels contextes les difficultés se manifestent-elles? Quelle est la spécificité de la correspondance des problèmes d'autorégulation aux troubles de comportement? Est-ce que des interventions précoces visant à soutenir les parents d'enfants à risque peuvent avoir un impact sur le développement de l'auto-régulation?
