    Les recherches de Lionel Carmant traitent des mécanismes impliqués dans les dommages cérébraux induits par une crise épileptique et les moyens de les prévenir. Il étudie ces mécanismes en s'appuyant sur la recherche clinique et sur les sciences fondamentales grâce aux nouveaux antiépileptiques, à la chirurgie et à l'étude de l'impact neuropsychologique des crises dans le développement humain.

    Au laboratoire, dans le cadre d'études in vivo et in vitro, il développe de nouveaux traitements pour contrôler ces crises ainsi que les dommages cérébraux qu'elles induisent pour ainsi mieux comprendre la pathophysiologie de ce processus si complexe.

    Ses recherches portent sur le rôle des réserves de calcium intracellulaire et sur leur libération par les récepteurs de glutamate métabotropique. La vidéo-EEG permet la surveillance des rats exposés à l'acide kainique dans les études in vivo. Il utilise également les tests de fonction neuropsychologique, surtout le test water-maze de Morris, ainsi que les évaluations neuropathologiques des lésions hippocampiques. D'ailleurs, il élabore un modèle pour l'étude des crises fébriles atypiques.

    À partir de tests in vitro, Dr Carmant fait des enregistrements intracellulaires avec la technique du patch clamp de neurones, combinée avec la technique d'imagerie calcique simultanée, afin de mettre en corrélation les changements neurophysiologiques avec fluctuations dans le calcium intracellulaire.
